Update 24th April 2020

Dear parents/Carers

I hope you are well and are managing to be positive during this situation. This letter will be shorter than usual as I want to solely focus on the home learning support we have been putting in place for you. There is also a document accompanying this letter which provides a step by step guide to access the website resources.

Home Learning for those Children unable to attend school

I want to remind all of our families that home learning resources are ready to be accessed on the school website and other resources are also available in paper-based format. Each Monday by 10:00am new work will be uploaded onto the website. Also on the website remote learning page are the email addresses of your child’s teacher.

To remind you, these resources can be accessed by the school website - on the home page, click the tab entitled ‘Coronavirus Remote Learning’ and then select the year group.

Please also use this link to access seesaw, whereby children from Year 1 to Year 6 will be able to click on their year groups page and access the QR code. Just to let you know, we will not be using any children’s images with the QR link.

If any families don’t have more than one device (one to get up the QR code and the other to log into seesaw using it) please contact the school on 020 76223820 to pick up a paper QR code.

Importantly, if families would like paper copies of resources for their children, please contact the school to arrange a time to come in and collect a pack. These packs contact materials for Maths and English.'

Furthermore, please see this link below for our youtube account to help with remote learning.

In addition, just to remind you, our P.E. Specialist, Adam, is also preparing 1 post a week for either youtube or twitter relating to staying fit and healthy at home.

I have mentioned previously, these learning resources are designed to support families throughout this period. We hope you find them useful, but please use these resources as little or as often as you like. To reiterate, the purpose of the support from all at Lark Hall is to sustain a sense of school over what is increasingly a lengthy period of time.

As ever, to remind you that if you are using internet-based resources, please be mindful of safe internet usage. Below is a very useful link for families with regard to online safety. It includes most of the apps and games children might use.

Letters and Sounds for Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 Children

We are pleased to let you know that your child can receive a daily phonics lesson whilst at home. Phonics is the way we teach children to recognise the sounds in words. It helps your child to learn to read and is an essential part of your child’s education.

During the summer term, you will be able to access for your child a daily phonics lesson by clicking on https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCP_FbjYUP_UtldV2K_niWw/featured?disable_polymer=1

All lessons are introduced by celebrities, including children’s TV presenters, which adds an exciting addition to the lessons. The online lessons are designed to follow the phonics programme your child has been learning at school and are the only online Letters and Sounds lessons approved and funded by the Department for Education.

There are three sets of daily lessons to choose from and we suggest your child starts with one set of lessons most suitable to their year group and reading ability.

From Monday 27 April, a new phonics lesson will be uploaded every day, Monday to Friday, at the times below during the summer term. *After upload, each lesson will then be available to watch at any time during the summer term.

After watching each lesson, we encourage you to read aloud to your child and, if your child has reading books, listen to your child read.

Once you have completed all of the Home Learning resources, then please focus on the following activities that are always worth maintaining every day are:

  • Reading and listening to stories
  • Reading and spelling the key word for your year group (these are in
  • the Home Learning Diaries)
  • Practising quick mental addition and subtraction and learning times
  • table and division acts
  • Please also look at other websites, such as BBC Bitesize - https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize and the national academy - https://www.thenational.academy

I do want to stress the hazards of spending too long looking at screens. As you are accessing lots of educational resources, then please try to limit the amount of your child’s passive screen time, such as TV shows, etc.

Yoga for our Children and Families

Sarah Jane Green, who is a Yoga teacher, has produced a yoga session especially for our children and families. It is amazing and I’m sure lots of you would find this extremely beneficial. Below is the link to the video that is on our youtube channel - https://youtu.be/LnuzANJqBug

Teachers Calling Families

To extend our communication channels with families and children, our teachers have started to make telephone calls to each of their children in the year groups. The aim here is to maintain home-school contact and to check in with you all. We hope we manage to get hold of all of our children.

Just a footnote; these calls will be made during school hours and may appear Number Withheld or Unknown Number on your telephone.

Finally, I do want to stress it is also very important that all of our families know we are here for you in the many different ways below.

  • If any family would like to speak to a member of the leadership team at Lark Hall, please contact the school on 020 76223820. We are on hand during the school day.
  • If you need to communicate with your child’s class teacher, on the website remote learning page you will find the email addresses of your child’s teacher.
  • If you want to communicate with Gary, his email address is head@larkhall.lambeth.sch.uk
  • For anything else, you are always welcome to contact the school in the usual ways via email or telephone.

I will carry on reiterating that sometimes a chat is all that is needed to get us through these times, so please do not hesitate to get in touch through any of the routes above.

That’s it from the leadership team at this time.

In the meantime, stay in, keep safe and we will be in touch again very soon.

Kind regards

The Senior Leadership Team
